Historic Log Cabin
Discovery and History

Original Builders: Built around 1885 by early pioneer settlers Carl and Mary Hanson, who homesteaded roughly 160 acres in the area.

Encapsulation: In the mid-20th century, a modern house was built completely around the roughly 550-square-foot log structure and original stone foundation, hiding it from view at 1435 N. State Street.

Later Residents: The property later belonged to the Japanese-American Shimada family, who ran a popular fruit stand on State Street and faced internment during World War II. 1
Preservation and Future Location

Removal: Demolition crews uncovered the cabin in November 2021, and preservation experts safely moved it to a secure temporary storage site in December 2021.

Heritage Park: The City of Orem plans to permanently restore and install the cabin at Heritage Park (currently under construction) located at 400 West and 400 South (across from Orem Elementary School).
